Canelo vs. Mbilli: Cairo Presser Set to Launch Riyadh Title Clash

Boxing’s super middleweight division will take centre stage on September 12 as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) challenges unbeaten WBC world champion Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The blockbuster announcement came from His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, who continues to reshape the sport’s landscape with marquee events in the Kingdom. The fight pairs the Mexican icon’s experience against the relentless pressure of the French-Cameroonian titleholder. Mbilli was elevated from interim to full WBC champion in January following Terence Crawford’s retirement and will make his first defence of the belt against Canelo. For Canelo, the bout represents a direct return to championship contention almost exactly one year after his undisputed crown was lost to Crawford in Las Vegas. Before they trade leather, both fighters will come face-to-face at a launch press conference in Cairo, Egypt. The event takes place on May 23 at 2 PM local time (12 PM UK, 7 AM ET) and will be streamed live globally on DAZN. The choice of Cairo adds a historic backdrop to an already international promotion, underscoring the global ambition behind the fight. Mbilli steps into the biggest opportunity of his career. Canelo, a former four-division world champion, seeks to reclaim a portion of his former dominance at 168 pounds against a hungry, rising champion. Further details, including the undercard and venue capacity, are expected to be revealed at the Cairo presser. Photo: Ring Magazine
