Tragedy: Undefeated Scottish Boxer Colin Cairney Dies at 22 After incident in Thailand
The boxing world is mourning undefeated Scottish welterweight Colin Cairney, who has died at the age of 22 following a catastrophic accident in Phuket, Thailand. Cairney, a 10‑0 (6 KOs) prospect, was critically injured in the early hours of 14 June after falling from a tuk‑tuk while returning to his hotel. According to the Daily Record, the young fighter had been involved in a dispute with the driver over a fare, and the vehicle was reportedly heading to an ATM when Cairney fell and suffered a severe head injury. Emergency services arrived at around 4:10 a.m. local time and rushed him to Patong Hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Cairney’s club, Team 1314, confirmed the devastating news through a GoFundMe page that raised over £55,000. “Everyone at Team 1314 is absolutely devastated by the loss of our Colin,” the statement read. “Colin isn’t just a member of our club, he is family. … His presence, his character, and the memories we shared with him will stay with us forever.” A separate family fundraiser, which amassed more than £60,000, had initially aimed to repatriate Cairney for further treatment. Its heartbreaking update turned the appeal into a memorial fund, describing the tragedy as “every parent’s worst nightmare.” Tributes have flooded in for the Lanarkshire‑based fighter, who was undefeated in ten professional outings, six by way of knockout. Remembered for his dedication in the ring and the warmth he brought to those around him, Cairney leaves behind a community united in grief. “Colin, you will be remembered forever and will always be in our hearts. Rest easy, Champ,” his club wrote. Photo: Colin Cairney / Facebook
