UK Boxing Bans Horsehair Gloves: What It Means for Fighters

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) has announced a historic shift in fighter safety: horsehair boxing gloves will be officially banned from all British professional shows starting January 1, 2028. According to updated BBBofC Guidelines, only foam-padded gloves will be permitted in UK rings moving forward. Traditional horsehair is heavily favored by power punchers because it compresses easily upon impact. This allows a fighter’s knuckles to sit closer to the surface, delivering maximum power. However, because the hair can shift and manipulate inside the leather, it has sparked massive ring disputes.
