Deontay Wilder BEATS Derek Chisora by split-decision

WILDER FOR THE WIN 🔥 Photo credit: The Ring Magazine Facebook page LONDON – Derek Chisora’s farewell fight didn’t go according to the fairytale script. In his 50th and final professional bout, the beloved British heavyweight came up just short against former WBC champion Deontay Wilder at the O2 Arena. The pre-fight narrative favored Chisora. With a roaring home crowd behind him and Wilder coming off lackluster performances against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, many expected the 42-year-old Londoner to ride off into the sunset with a victory. But Wilder silenced the doubters. The American’s legendary right hand was on full display, dropping Chisora twice and leaving the veteran’s face battered and swollen. Yet Chisora, as he always has, refused to stay down. He fought through the punishment, even managing to floor Wilder himself in an unforgettable 11th-round exchange. When the scorecards were read, two judges saw it for Wilder (115-111 and 115-113), while a third scored it 115-112 for Chisora. The split-decision verdict drew boos from the sellout crowd, but few could argue the outcome was unfair. “Tonight I was having a lot of fun,” Wilder said post-fight, now 45-4-1 with 43 knockouts. “I had to heal – it took a long time – but I’m back. I knew Derek was going to bring everything he had. I started seeing his eyes and temples swell. I told him, ‘Bro, you’ve got to live for your kids. I don’t want to hurt you.’” Wilder added that he held back at times out of concern for his opponent’s safety. “Too many lives have been lost in this ring. I looked after Derek tonight.” The bout was far from a technical masterpiece. Both warriors traded wild hooks, grabbed and mauled, and at times looked like two brawlers settling a score outside a pub. A controversial point deduction against Wilder in the eighth for pushing Chisora through the ropes only added to the chaos. Chisora finishes his career with a record of 36-14 (23 KOs). The crowd sang his name long after the decision was announced. One can only hope the man they call “Del Boy” stays true to his word this time and enjoys a well-earned retirement.
