Baumgardner Batters Shin to Retain Unified Crown in MSG Thriller

NEW YORK – Alycia Baumgardner didn't just walk into The Theater at Madison Square Garden with hip-hop royalty; she fought like it. Escorted to the ring by "Queen B" Lil' Kim, the Detroit native defended her unified junior lightweight throne with a clear, hard-fought unanimous decision victory over South Korea's Bo Mi Re Shin. The official scorecards read 99-91 and 98-92 (twice), reflecting Baumgardner's superior technical form and punishing power shots. Fighting under the three-minute round format for the second consecutive outing, Baumgardner (now 18-1, 7 KOs) used a piston-like jab to set up thudding right hands early, rocking Shin repeatedly in the fifth with uppercuts and hooks.
