The Matrix Reloaded: Lomachenko Ends Retirement as Free Agent, Eyes Fall Superfight

The Ukrainian maestro is back. In a stunning development, Vasiliy Lomachenko has decided to end his brief retirement and is targeting a ring return this fall, sources tell The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. The news arrives on the very day his long-term deal with Top Rank expires, transforming the former three-division world champion into a promotional free agent for the first time in his professional career. The 37-year-old legend hasn’t competed since May 2024, when he traveled to Perth, Australia, and delivered a vintage, career-reaffirming masterclass. Facing George Kambosos Jr. for the vacant IBF lightweight title, Lomachenko thoroughly dominated the former unified champion before forcing an 11th‑round technical knockout with a savage body attack, reclaiming his place at the top of the 135‑pound division. Following months of deliberation and the sport’s political frustrations, he officially walked away in June 2025, leaving the title behind. Now, unencumbered by promotional ties and with his competitive fire reignited, Lomachenko is hunting the biggest fights possible atop the sport’s glamour division—and the lightweight landscape is suddenly on notice.
